Tesla Model Y Insurance Cost (2026): Real Figures by Trim

How much does Tesla Model Y insurance cost? Typical US and UK figures by trim, how it compares to the Model 3, whether Tesla Insurance is worth it, and how to pay less.

The Tesla Model Y is one of the best-selling cars in the world, which means a lot of people are getting a quote for one — and finding it higher than they expected. Here is what it actually costs, why, and where the savings are.

What a Model Y costs to insure

Approximate 2026 premiums — a guide, not a quote:

  • US: roughly $250–$380/month for full coverage (about $3,000–$4,600/year).
  • UK: roughly £950–£2,000/year comprehensive for a typical driver.

By trim, the spread looks like this:

Model Y trimUS (approx/year, full)UK (approx/year, comp)
Rear-wheel drive$3,000–$3,600£950–£1,400
Long Range AWD$3,300–$4,100£1,150–£1,650
Performance$3,900–$4,600+£1,500–£2,000+

Figures are approximate published averages for 2026, not quotes. A driver in their forties with a clean record in a low-risk area may pay well below these; a younger driver in a city will pay well above.

Insurers worth comparing: in the US, quote State Farm, Travelers, Geico, Progressive and Nationwide, plus Tesla Insurance where it operates. In the UK, try LV=, Direct Line, Aviva, Admiral and Churchill. Tesla quotes vary unusually widely between insurers, so comparing several genuinely pays.

Why it costs what it does

The Model Y is a safe car with an expensive repair bill — and insurance prices the second one.

  • Repair cost, not crash risk. Aluminium panels, large structural castings and a dense array of cameras and sensors mean even moderate damage runs into serious money. A bumper replacement takes recalibration work a conventional car does not need.
  • Approved body shops only. Tesla repairs route through a limited certified network. Fewer shops means longer repair times, longer courtesy-car periods, and higher claim costs.
  • Value. Replacement cost is one of the biggest single inputs, and the Model Y sits above most mainstream SUVs.
  • Acceleration. Even the base trim is quick by SUV standards, and performance correlates with claim frequency.

That combination is the whole story in why EV insurance is so expensive — the Model Y just concentrates it.

Model Y vs Model 3: the honest comparison

The gap is real but smaller than the internet suggests — often 5–10%, not a different league.

Model 3Model Y
BodySedanSUV — taller, heavier
Typical US premium$235–$350/mo$250–$380/mo
Repair profileSame certified networkSame, slightly larger panels
Safety offsetStrongStrong; low centre of gravity helps

The Model Y is heavier and usually worth more in like-for-like trims, which pushes it up. Its excellent crash-test performance and low rollover risk pull back the other way. If you are cross-shopping, quote both on identical details — for some drivers the Model Y comes out level or even cheaper. Full comparison in Tesla Model 3 insurance cost.

Is Tesla Insurance worth quoting?

Where it is offered, yes — but not automatically.

Tesla Insurance prices partly on your Safety Score, generated from how you actually drive (following distance, hard braking, aggressive turning, late-night driving). That is a genuine departure from traditional pricing, which leans on age, postcode and credit-based proxies.

  • It tends to favour careful drivers, and drivers whose demographics are penalised elsewhere — younger people especially.
  • It tends to disappoint drivers with a low Safety Score, since the price adjusts monthly and can climb.
  • Availability is limited — it operates in some US states and not others, and is unavailable in many countries.

Treat it as one quote among several, not a shortcut. And be aware the score is continuously monitored: your premium can move month to month rather than staying fixed for the year.

Where the savings actually are

  1. Choose the trim deliberately. Performance to Long Range is often a bigger annual saving than switching insurers.
  2. Quote at least five insurers, Tesla Insurance included where available. Tesla premiums vary more between carriers than almost any other car.
  3. Buy used. A two- or three-year-old Model Y carries a materially lower replacement value — see new vs used EV insurance cost.
  4. Raise the deductible or voluntary excess to a figure you could genuinely pay tomorrow.
  5. Set mileage accurately. Many Model Y owners over-estimate, and over-estimating costs money.
  6. Check the repair network near you. If the nearest certified shop is far away, expect that to show in the price — and confirm which insurers have good Tesla claims-handling reputations before choosing on price alone.

The ordered playbook is in how to lower your EV insurance premium, and the brand-wide view in how much it costs to insure a Tesla.

The short version

Budget $250–$380 a month in the US or £950–£2,000 a year in the UK, with the Performance trim at the top end. The premium is driven by repair cost and approved-shop scarcity, not by the car being dangerous. Your two biggest levers are trim choice and quoting widely — including Tesla Insurance if you can get it and drive carefully.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to insure a Tesla Model Y?+

Reported 2026 averages put full coverage at roughly $250–$380 a month in the US (about $3,000–$4,600 a year), or around £950–£2,000 a year comprehensive in the UK. The Performance trim sits at the top of those ranges, and your location, age and record move the figure substantially.

Is the Model Y more expensive to insure than the Model 3?+

Usually slightly, but less than most people expect — often only 5–10%. The Model Y is heavier and higher-value in like-for-like trims, though its lower centre of gravity and strong safety scores offset some of that. Quote both if you are choosing between them.

Which Model Y trim is cheapest to insure?+

The rear-wheel-drive or standard Long Range version. It has less power and a lower value than the Performance trim, which sits in a clearly more expensive bracket.

Is Tesla Insurance cheaper for a Model Y?+

Sometimes, and it is genuinely worth quoting where it is available. It prices partly on your in-car Safety Score rather than traditional proxies, which can favour careful drivers. Drivers with a poor Safety Score, or those in states or countries where it is not offered, often do better elsewhere.

Why is the Model Y expensive to insure if it is so safe?+

Safety reduces injury claims but not repair costs. The Model Y is sensor-dense, uses aluminium and structural castings that are costly to repair, and must go to approved body shops. High repair cost, not crash risk, is what drives the premium.

Does the Model Y cost more to insure than a similar gas SUV?+

Generally yes. A comparable petrol or gas SUV usually insures for less, because repair costs are lower, parts are more widely available and the vehicle value is typically lower. The gap has been narrowing as more shops become EV-certified.

Does a used Model Y cost less to insure?+

Usually yes. A used example has a lower replacement value, which is one of the largest inputs in the premium. An older Model Y with the same trim can insure noticeably cheaper than a new one.
